The 1985 movie, Teen Wolf, inspired many teens to try car surfing.
A new study shows "car surfing" is on the rise (again) among male teens, age 16 to 19. "Car surfing" or "ghost riding" is when one person climbs onto the roof of a car and begins to "surf" as if they were on water - a lot of times with no driver - or the teen is on a skateboard or rollerblades, holding onto the side of a moving vehicle, also known as "skitching".
Car surfing may sound fun, but it is a very dangerous trend. "Car surfers" are prone to accidents, serious injuries, and death even if the vehicle is moving at very slow speeds. Watch this video to see just how crazy and dangerous this can be.
This is another one of those times when teenagers make poor decisions, because the "logical" part of their brain is not fully developed, so they can't see the consequences...they only see the thrills of the act. This is another topic worth discussing with your teen, especially if you have a teen son.
