TEEN TRENDS - TEEN SMOKING...CANDY?

(This blog is written to inform parents and others of disturbing trends of teenagers.)

It's taking place in lunchrooms, playgrounds, and classrooms. It may even be happening in your own home - kids smoking candy.

It sounds bizarre, even impossible, and although they call it "smoking", kids aren't actually lighting a match to the candy. Instead, they crush the candy into a fine powder in its wrapper, then draw it into their mouth, and blow it out in a cloud of dust. Some kids snort the sugary powder.

This may sound innocent enough, but medical experts are alarmed at this new trend and are concerned about possible side effects.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • If the sugary powder sits in the lungs or nasal cavity for prolonged periods of time, bacteria can form and cause infections.

  • Chronic coughing (smoker's cough).

  • Choking (either on whole pieces of candy or on the wrapper itself).

  • Pieces of candy can get lodged in the nose.

  • The fine powder could be sucked down the wrong pipe.

  • Also there's been instances of maggots entering the nose and feeding on the sugar.
TYPES OF CANDY USED:
  • Smarties
  • Conversation hearts
  • Sweet Tarts
  • Pixy Styx
A quick search on YouTube shows dozens of how-to videos created by all types of kids - boys, girls, black, white, young and old.

Due to potential dangers, some schools have made it clear that students caught with Smarties or similar candy will face a Class II offense.

As parents, we know that kids often do what's "in" just so they can fit in, and they don't think about the consequences. So if you have tweens and teens, you need to add this to the list of topics to discuss with them. (That list seems to keep getting longer.) They need to understand that there are dangers to smoking candy (explain about the maggots). Parents also need to realize that smoking Smarties could be a gateway leading to smoking cigarettes, pot or other illegal drug use.

Teenagers are impossible, but they do grow fast, if you can survive.
