TEEN TRENDS: THEY'RE DRINKING WHAT??

I'm sure most everyone has heard the news this week about teens drinking sanitizer, so I decided to investigate exactly how much alcohol is in a bottle of hand sanitizer.

  • Purell - 62% Ethyl Alcohol
  • New & Inproved Purell - 70% Ethyl Alcohol
  • Germ-X - 63% Ethyl Alcohol
  • Sani-hands Hand Sanitizer Wipes - 65.9%
  • Walgreen's Brand - 65% Ethyl Alcohol
*"The Los Angeles Times reported some of the teenagers used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer using instructions found online. If a liquid hand sanitizer contains 62 percent ethyl alcohol, that means a "drink" can be as high as 120 proof, whereas a shot of hard liquor such as whiskey or vodka is typically 80 proof. "

SIGNS OF ALCOHOL POISONING(from hand sanitizer):
  • Slurred speech
  • Burning sensation in stomach
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Slowed breathing
HEALTH RISKS:
  • Vision problems/blindness
  • Internal organ damage
  • Diarrhea
  • Memory loss
Apparently, this isn't a new trend.  According to KSAT.com, poison control centers received 622 calls involving teenagers, who drank hand sanitizer.  There has been 203 calls so far this year.

And you may be wondering..."Why?"  It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy alcohol, but anyone at any age can walk into a store and buy a bottle of hand sanitizer.

I don't believe there are billions of teenagers getting drunk on hand sanitizer.  Neither one of my daughters has heard of this, and both asked "why would they do that?" Some of these teen trends are regional, but if you are the parent of a tween or teen, you should talk to him/her about the dangers of ingesting hand sanitizer.  These trends have been known to spread like wild fire, and as I've said before, knowledge is power.

Yeah I saw something about this online and couldn't believe it.
Ridiculous.
But glad that parents are being made aware. To me, just knowing is half the battle in life.
Glad I hopped over from BloggyMoms.

Thanks for the info. I had heard something like this, but really couldn't believe it. I'm going to ask the girls tonight during what they know about this.
